Which are the best dog friendly pubs in the UK?

For those of us who can’t or won’t travel without the pet pooch, pub options are limited. But they’re not out of bounds. Although a lot of pubs will stop your trusted friend at the door, others welcome dogs with open arms. Here are just a few to try out with your paw-tastic pal.

Walking

If you and your walking companion have six legs between you, your own bar awaits in Skenfrith, South East Wales. The Dog & Boot Bar is a dedicated area of The Bell at Skenfrith for dog walkers. Here, it doesn’t matter if your wellies are caked in mud or you’re covered in dog hair. Outside the bar, you’ll be able to hose yourselves down and dry off before taking in snacks on offer for you and your dog.

Staying over

If you’re looking for a longer stay, The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel in Devon offers “family and pet holidays” so nobody has to stay at home. The great outdoors is high up on the menu with nature trails for all the family. At the end of a long, adventurous day on the south coast, your dog will be given her very own towel to snuggle up in. She’s then free to roam most of the property and make herself at home.

Keeping clean

When you stay away from home, a bathroom free from clutter and laundry can be a real treat. But what about the dog? You needn’t worry about her at the Fox Inn in Dorchester. Your dog can extend a pampered paw for indulgent treatment in her very own grooming parlour. The pub’s wet room for dogs has a shower with shampoos, towels and a dryer, plus a grooming table.

Drinking

The Brandling Villa in South Gosford is run with the help of two resident dogs, Franco and Ladybird. The landlords love dogs so much they started to offer dog beer on their premises and punters have lapped it up. In fact, the Newcastle pub has shown such devotion to dogs it recently won a DogBuddy Dog-friendly Pub Award. It’s safe to say your pint will go down well here!

Dining

Dog owners love to see the appreciation of their four-legged friends. On the City Tavern website, there’s a Wall of Fame for all the dogs who once put their paws up inside the pub. Like old friends, dogs are welcomed in and given a bowl to drink from. Your four-legged companion can even pick a gourmet dog treat from the menu and hang out with resident hounds, Alfie, Hector and Dillon.

If your dog is anxious, go somewhere peaceful like the Bear of Rodborough which describes its offering as “doggy heaven”. Or if your dog suffers from travel sickness, visit your vet for a treatment solution. You’re then free to visit vibrant pubs like the Boatman in Windsor where your prince or princess pooch will be “treated like royalty.”
